karimganj_ashramaSome devotees of Karimganj (the most notable being Late Rukmini Mohon Choudhury,Bana Behari Dutta,Kalisaday Pashchima and Satish Chandra Dev) started the Seva Samiti in 1917.They had been inspired by Revered Swami Premeshanandaji Maharaj(then Sri Indradayal Bhattacharjee) of Sylhet. That was a very significant time in India and abroad after the death of Swami Vivekananda when the impact of Ramakrishna-Vivekananda ideas and philosophy was strongly felt. After the birth of the Seva Samiti, monks from the Sylhet centre of Ramakrishna Mission would often visit it and stay speaking to the people of the place about Sri Sri Thakur, Sri Sri Ma and Swamiji thereby spreading the powerful ideas and message of the holy trinity. At first, the Seva Samiti was a branch centre of Ramakrishna Mission Seva Samiti, Sylhet. On the 1st October 1947, soon after India’s independence, the Karimganj Seva Samiti became an “Independent Branch Centre of Ramakrishna Mission”.Since then the Seva Samiti has carried out many important responsibilities and services for the people of its region. The most remarkable of these are the East Pakistan Exodus Relief in 1950 and the Bangladesh Evacuee Relief in 1971. Its activities cover the following broad areas: educational, philanthropic, religious and cultural.
